a day in Squamish

Caressed between the Tantalus mountains and the Pacific Ocean, carved by wild rivers and emerald lakes, the allure of Squamish is as clear as the waters that run through it. Offering a bounty of world-class attractions and amenities, outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers have long called this city home.

Following the $775M renovation to the Sea-to-Sky highway in the early 2000s, Squamish cast off its reputation as a fuel and coffee stop along the road to Whistler.  The renewed Sea-to-Sky helped to grow the community over the past two decades–welcoming a new collective of young professionals and growing families who wanted to plant their roots in the West Coast landscape.

Come along as we spend a day in Squamish, exploring its many local gems, thriving community hubs, and outdoor adventures.

Rise and shine in Squamish

Start your day early with the boost only locally roasted coffee can offer at Bean Brackendale on Government Street. Opening its doors  at 5:30am, early risers can take in the local fleets of cyclists and hikers.. Ask your barista about their recommendations for a pastry pairing, as their bakehouse changes their seasonal offerings, toting local favourites like their weekend cronuts, vegan breakfast sandwiches, and unique takes on the classic biscotti.

For another dose of caffeine, head to Caffe Garibaldi on Logger’s Lane. Flocked by the trees and mountain vistas of Smoke Bluffs Park as your backdrop, you can take in the scenery while enjoying one of their crafted espresso drinks, grilled paninis, and fresh-baked pastries. Don’t forget to grab something extra for the road.

Breathe, sweat, and celebrate

Make your way downtown to rejuvenate your mind and spirit with a yoga class at Breathe Squamish Fitness Studio, voted “Best Yoga Studio” in Squamish for three years and counting. With an intimate setting, this locally owned studio has built a loyal following thanks to its commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. Work up a sweat in one of their Hot Yoga Flow classes (just remember to arrive hydrated), or challenge your strength in a full-body circuit training class.. Once the body and mind have had a chance to calibrate, you’ll be energized for your next adventure.

Shop like a local

Explore the locally-made and handcrafted goods that are signature to the community. Pop in to Nootka and Sea on Mamquam Road, where you’ll discover a modern apothecary of curated home goods and self-care.

Just down the road, hunt through the treasures at Pearl’s Value & Vintage on Cleveland Avenue, a non-profit community thrift shop that has been serving the community since 2000. The shop has become a popular retail destination capturing the gaze of passersby with their magnetic window displays. The store is brimming with linens, vinyl records, books, jewelry, shoes, housewares, and clothing, all waiting to be cherished by new owners. All the proceeds from your purchase go directly to Pearl Spaces programs.

Get elevated at the Chief

While making your way along the Sea-to-Sky highway, your entry to Squamish is marked by the towering granite monolith of the Stawamus Chief, where sweeping views of the region can be found from its peak. Follow the 1.7 KM trail, ascending nearly 600 meters, to the second peak for the Chief’s most iconic vantage point. If you’re seeking something more advanced, test your strength and rock climbing skills as you scale the Chief’s steep rock face.

Try a pint of Squamish’s finest

Squamish has become renowned in recent years for its craft brewing and distillery scene, from small-batch gins to hearty stouts— there’s a locally crafted beer, cider, or spirit catering to even the most discerning palates. Enjoy a flight of local beers at A-Frame Brewing’s tap room, and sample their seasonal and limited-released brews on tap. If you’re in the mood for something stronger, travel to Raincity Distillery’s tasting room to experience some locally sourced and inspired spirits. Their cocktail menu evolves with the season and highlights their small-batch spirits, like their Black Tusk Smoked Vodka or the floral-infused Last Garden Gin
