a day in Fremont

Affectionately known as the "Centre of the Universe”--at least according to locals and the famous sign marking its centre–Fremont is considered one of Seattle’s liveliest neighbourhoods. It’s home to a thriving arts scene and an eclectic mix of independent boutiques, coffee shops, and bistros marked by its colourful streets. Let's take a closer look at the neighbourhood and what continues to draw Seattlites to the neighbourhood.

Where the art finds you

As you stroll the streets of Fremont, you'll notice a distinct air of eccentricity. Colourful murals adorn Fremont’s walls, and fanciful sculptures seem to appear around every corner. The neighbourhood first established itself in the 1960s as a mecca for the artsy, attracting a community of free-thinkers, artists, and students, drawn by the low rental prices of that decade which welcomed a small renaissance of its own. Declared an Artist’s Republic, its reputation has endured the decades and is still the proud home of diverse artists' studios, from tattoo parlours to glass blowing, pottery wheels to painting, and more.

Experience the creative culture for yourself by taking a walk through the neighbourhood. The community is alive with outdoor art installations, but perhaps one of the best known is the Fremont Troll, a whimsical sculpture waiting to be discovered under the Aurora Bridge. If you’re looking for a guide, join the Fremont Art Walk which takes place every Friday.

One-of-a-kind finds

Every Sunday for the past 34 years, Fremont has transformed itself  into a vibrant marketplace, rain or shine. Hosting up to 165 vendors, visitors can stroll along as they take in a bounty of rare finds, including antiques, collectibles, vintage clothes, and global imports. t. And if hunger strikes, there is something to entice any palate from one of the many local artisanal food purveyors on site.

Fremont is also home to the Fremont Vintage Mall where patrons can easily spend hours exploring its one-of-a-kind treasures— From furniture to records, to art and jewelry .. The Vintage Mall has become a favourite spot for celebrities passing through the city, including Seattle-native Macklemore who rose to fame on his hit, “Thrift Shop.”

Unique and indulgent flavours

It’s hard to place Fremont’s dining scene in a box because there’s something for everyone, from elite eateries to casual fare. If you find yourself in the mood for a morning jolt, Fremont has plenty of cafes to try as well. Aroom Coffee serves Vietnamese phin-brewed coffee with unique infused flavours. Order one of their signature Sesame Lattes or the Caphe Trung Egg Coffee for something airy, creamy, and unlike anything you’ve been served at Starbucks.

If you’re looking to indulge your taste buds, make a reservation at Kamonegi. Named one of the Best New Restaurants in America in 2018, this small restaurant has earned a cult-like following thanks to Chef Matsuko’s handmade soba noodles. Make a night of it by sampling some sake and shochu next door at Hannyatou Bar.
