Team Tuesday: Will Black

Meet Will Black, a real estate advisor who recently joined rennie's Squamish team. Keep reading to learn some fun facts about Will, including the classic rock songs he can sing by heart and his favourite travel destinations.

What inspired you to join rennie?
I wanted to be part of a team that has office space. I was planning on joining another local brokerage, but then I noticed rennie was opening an rspace in Squamish. I really liked the team that rennie assembled, and after I learned more about the company, my mind was set on joining them. Also -- Rennie is my middle name, in honour of my grandmother as it was her maiden name. I wonder if I'm a distant relative of Bob and Kris?

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I once completed an intensive 10-day meditation program, and we couldn't speak the entire time. I had never meditated once in my life before doing it, and it was rough. I also managed a beachside restaurant on a Caribbean Island for a few months in my twenties.

What song you can sing word for word?
I used to really love Pulp and can sing "Common People" and "Disco 2000" without looking at the words. I can also do a few Morrissey songs -- please don't judge me.

What brings you the most joy?
Lately, I would say when I try a new recipe and my kids like it. Making my kids happy makes me happy. I also love NFL football and playing golf.

What is your favourite thing to splurge on?
Travel and food -- I've been splurging more on the latter these past years.

Best beach/park/outdoor space in the city and why?
There are quite a few rivers and lakes to visit in-and-around Squamish. Levette Lake and Lucille Lake are my favourite spots for swimming.

What movie do you highly recommend?
Movies used to be a passion of mine, and I would go out of my way to watch independent/foreign films. Along that line, I highly recommend "The Celebration" -- a Danish flick with very heavy subject matter.   It won’t make you happy, that's for sure, but it was very well done. “Dr. Strangelove" is another classic -- made in the '60s but very relevant today. Peter Sellers is amazing. I don't watch movies much anymore, but I recently saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and enjoyed it.

What is one of your fondest travel memories?
When I was young, my family moved to Nigeria, and I lived there for three years. During that time, we took a trip through Europe in a camper van, which was so much fun.   As an adult, my wife (then girlfriend) and I  took a two-month tour through Southeast Asia -- Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. So many great memories from that trip, and I plan to visit again with my kids when they're a bit older.

What is your most memorable job before real estate?
I was briefly an anchorman for the English channel at CCTV News in Beijing -- we had 13 million viewers on a slow night. Take that, Chris Gailus!
