top 5 neighbourhoods to foster community

Vancouver has consistently been ranked as one of the most friendly cities in the world, but the topic can stir up debate among locals. Newcomers to Vancouver set out in pursuit of new connections and community, but the question is “where to start?” The city has many unique neighborhoods with a strong sense of community, in addition to its alluring scenery. Read on as we share our top neighbourhoods to foster a sense of community in Vancouver.

Kitsilano

This beautiful beachside Vancouver neighbourhood is an ocean lover’s dream. The once popular hippie hangout has transformed in recent years into a community synonymous with Lululemons, laid-back attitudes, and a beloved home to both families and young professionals. Kitsilano Beach is the main attraction of the district, and comes alive in warmer months as hundreds make their way to the shores for volleyball or to swim in the ocean or at the nearby outdoor saltwater pool. Abundant in shops, eateries, and activities, it's easy to make new connections with people who count Kitsilano’s unique offering as a value.

Commercial Drive

For a taste of Vancouver’s cultural diversity, look no further than “The Drive”, tracing blocks of eclectic shops, quirky cafes and a myriad of small arts venues. With a rich Italian heritage, Commercial Drive has been home to the city’s Little Italy since the early 1940s, and its pride holds true today. In recent years, this neighbourhood has become a main attraction for families, with plenty of community events taking place throughout the year, including the Farmer’s Market at John Hendry Park, the Parade of Lost Souls, and the  annual Car-Free Day in the summer. There is always a drumming circle, yoga class or market to try, making it a great location to meet like-minded folks.

Yaletown

In 1986 as the World Fair made its debut in Vancouver, what we recognize as Yaletown today was first born. Now, one of the trendiest neighbourhoods among those who live to see and be seen, the community has become tantamount industrial chic. Connected to Vancouver’s largest entertainment venues, including BC Place and David Lam Park, it's the closest neighbourhood for a post-game cocktail whether you’re cheering for the Canucks or BC Lions. With a thriving nightlife known to attract some of the city’s most notable figures, there is no drought of posh restaurants, spas, and boutique destinations to explore and forge new friendships.

Davie Village

Adorned with its welcoming rainbow flags, Davie Village in Vancouver’s West End has long been one of the best known places in the city to celebrate and find acceptance. Known as the heart of Vancouver’s LGBTQ+ scene, it's been a haven that attracts locals from across the globe. Centred around Davie Street, the community comes to life in the evenings as the restaurants and bars of the neighbourhood spill out into the streets. However, it’s not all nightlife – the neighbourhood is overflowing with locally-owned businesses, including Little Sister Bookstore, and authentic restaurants with culinary offerings for the global palette. For a more laid back approach, spend a summer day a stroll away at English Bay and take in a sunset surrounded by new potential pals.

False Creek

False Creek would easily be considered Vancouver’s artisan capital with the presence of Granville Island and ties to Emily Carr University. Whether an inspired at-home chef or a fan of the theatre, the neighbourhood is a vibrant collage of creativity in all its forms. Throughout the year, False Creek plays host to a number of festivals catering to all types of communities, including the Fringe Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, and Winter Solstice Lantern Festival. With plenty of unique places to enjoy fresh air, or find shelter from the rain, False Creek has a charming ability to bring people together.
