Top 5 Kid-Friendly Hikes on Vancouver's North Shore

North Vancouver, which is often referred to as the north shore, is a wonderland of lush forests, sparkling waters, and majestic mountains, making it an ideal playground for families. Getting out into nature with your kids is a fantastic way to bond, burn off some energy, and create lasting memories. But with so many trails, where do you start?

Here are my top 5 picks for kid-friendly hikes on the North Shore.

1. The Baden-Powell Trail (Deep Cove Section)

This iconic trail stretches across the North Shore, but the section near Deep Cove is particularly family-friendly. You can choose to do shorter out-and-back walks, or for a slightly longer adventure, head towards Quarry Rock.

Why it's great for kids: Well-maintained paths, stunning water views, and the promise of a delicious donut from Honey Doughnuts & Goodies in Deep Cove afterwards!

Pro Tip: Go early to beat the crowds, especially on sunny weekends, and please obey local parking regulations in place.

2. Capilano Pacific Trail (Ambleside to Park Royal)

This paved and well-groomed trail offers an accessible and scenic walk along the mouth of the Capilano River and the Burrard Inlet. Starting from Ambleside Park, you can stroll towards Park Royal, enjoying views of the Lions Gate Bridge, downtown Vancouver, and the bustling inlet.

Why it's great for kids: Flat, paved surface perfect for strollers, scooters, or little legs. Plus, there are plenty of spots to stop and watch boats or look for eagles.

Pro Tip: Pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the many grassy areas in Ambleside Park.

3. Lighthouse Park (West Vancouver)

Lighthouse Park is a true gem, offering a network of trails through old-growth forests that lead to breathtaking ocean views and the iconic Lighthouse. The trails vary in difficulty, so you can choose a shorter, flatter route or something a bit more challenging for older kids.

Why it's great for kids: The "wow" factor of seeing the lighthouse, clambering over rocks by the water, and exploring giant trees. It feels like a real adventure!

Pro Tip: Wear sturdy shoes as some paths can be rocky and uneven. Don't forget your camera for those stunning panoramic shots.

4. Lynn Canyon Park (North Vancouver)

Lynn Canyon Park is famous for its exhilarating (and free!) suspension bridge, but the park offers much more than just that. There are numerous trails weaving through temperate rainforest, leading to beautiful waterfalls, swimming holes (for brave souls in summer!), and scenic viewpoints.

Why it's great for kids: The thrill of the suspension bridge, cool water features, and plenty of opportunities for nature exploration and spotting local wildlife.

Pro Tip: This park gets very busy, especially on weekends. Arrive early or consider visiting on a weekday to avoid crowds. There's also a cafe on site for refreshments.

5. Rice Lake Loop (Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve)

Located within the tranquil Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, the Rice Lake Loop is a relatively flat and accessible trail that circumnavigates the peaceful Rice Lake. The path is wide and well-maintained, making it ideal for families with young children or strollers.

Why it's great for kids: An easy, picturesque loop with opportunities to spot ducks, fish, and other wildlife. It's a serene escape from the city hustle.

Pro Tip: This trail is also popular for cycling, so be mindful of bikes. There are picnic tables near the entrance for a post-hike snack.
