Vancouver's Empty Homes Tax - Declaration Reminder

For properties deemed to be empty, the payable tax will be equal to 1% of a property's 2018 assessed taxable value.
Ryan Berlin  |  January 30, 2019
Each year, all owners of residential property in the City of Vancouver are required to submit a property status declaration to determine if their property is subject to the City of Vancouver's Empty Homes Tax (EHT). This year the declaration deadline is due by February 4, 2019.

For properties deemed to be empty, the payable tax will be equal to 1% of a property's 2018 assessed taxable value. The Bylaw details can be found here

While most homes will not be subject to the tax, as it does not apply to principal residences or homes rented for at least 6 months of the year, all homeowners are required to submit a declaration.

It is important to note that this declaration is separate from the Provincial Government's recent Speculation and Vacancy Tax which must also be filed by all property owners in the City.
